The Ballad of Lord Demonicus

The Ballad of Lord Demonicus was an ambitious themed anthology / collaborative graphic novel I tried to make happen but I was unable to find a publisher to support it.

The concept was that the book would be supposed to be a TPB collection of "the best stories" of imaginary super-villain, Lord Demonicus. Seven comics, from different eras, with Demonicus being the antagonist or a guest star in each. Each issue/chapter would attempt to mimic the style of the era and through all this we'd see the evolution of a character. If we did this correctly despite all the creative direction changes and continuity "errors" a complete story would emerge, the personal arc of Lord Demonicus.

It was to be written by me and drawn by a bunch of great artists like Glory's Ross Campbell, Higher Earth's Francesco Biagini or BPRD's James Harren!

Too bad this won't happen. Here's sketches that were done for the original pitch.

Chapter 1 - The All-Powerful Crusaders #7 ( June 1963)

Drawn by Ralph Niese.
In the seventh issue of the world's greatest super-hero comic book, Lord Demonicus makes his dynamic debut!

Chapter 2 - Monster Treasury #28 ( October 1972)

Drawn by Michael Dialynas.
In the 28th issue of the acclaimed anthology of the macabre 60s super-villain Lord Demonicus returns and his origin is for the first time revealed.

Chapter 3 - The New Crusaders #25 ( May 1984)

Drawn by Ilias Kyriazis.
In the anniversary issue of the mega-hit title of the 80s, Lord Demonicus returns from the dead and is given new depth as a tragic antagonist.

Chapter 4 - The Dark #4 ( December 1989)

Drawn by James Harren.
In the ground-breaking, “mature readers” series the villain – now called simply Demonicus- is radically re-invented as a street-wise, sexually ambiguous “occult specialist”.

Chapter 5 -  Killscream #0 (November 1993)

 Drawn by Ross Campbell.
This is not your father's Lord Demonicus! In the debut issue of the mega-violent series the character returns to his super-villain roots, more blood-thirsty than ever!

Chapter 6 - Crusaders Movie Adaptation #5 (April 2005)

The fifth issue of the comic-book adaptation of the high-grossing movie that enraged fans with the liberties it took with the source material and its depiction of Lord Demonicus as an african-american high-tech terrorist rather than a wizard.

Chapter 7- Crux #34 (December 2021)

Drawn by Betteo.
Remember him?! Obscure super-villain Lord Demonicus appears in a very special issue of the acclaimed “meta-superhero” series.
